Fact or F?ck
Inspiration
I've wanted to create a trivia game that wasn’t just fun but also rooted in real, community-driven knowledge. Reddit is home to endless fascinating facts, discussions, and even misconceptions. The idea for Fact or F?ck came from asking: Can we turn this endless stream of information into a game that’s entertaining, educational, and social?
What it does
Fact or F?ck is a fast-paced trivia game that challenges players to decide whether a statement is true (Fact) or false/fiction (F?ck). Each question comes with a quick explanation so players learn as they go. Scores are recorded on a global leaderboard, creating competition among Redditors worldwide. The game integrates directly with Reddit, dynamically pulling content from the subreddit where it's currently installed (like todayilearned) to keep the trivia fresh, relevant, and community-driven.
How we built it
I just followed the quickstart guide and built up from there.
- Reddit API: To fetch posts and facts from the current subreddit like todayilearned.
- Google Gemini: Generates a fact and fiction version of the same post.
- Backend (NodeJS ExpressJS): Built a service to clean, format, and convert subreddit posts into trivia-style questions.
- Frontend (React): A lightweight, interactive UI for smooth gameplay with buttons for Fact and F?ck, result reveal animations, and leaderboard tracking.
- Leaderboard System: Implemented a global scoreboard so players can compete in real time.
- Hosting & Deployment: Deployed via Reddit’s developer platform.
Challenges we ran into
- Filtering subreddit content to generate clear, concise trivia questions without ambiguity.
- Ensuring a fast, responsive experience when pulling live Reddit data.
- Finding music and sound effects that are perfectly tailored for the game.
- Designing an intuitive UI
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- I've built my first Reddit app.
- Successfully created a trivia game that feels native to Reddit communities.
- Integrated dynamic, community-sourced content to keep the game endlessly fresh.
- Built a smooth and addictive gameplay loop that both entertains and educates.
- Developed a working global leaderboard that motivates friendly competition.
What we learned
Right now the game doesn't have any users, so I'll just speak based on the development side of things.
- How to leverage Reddit’s API in creative ways to gamify community knowledge.
- The importance of content curation when mixing user-generated data with gameplay.
- How subtle UX design decisions (like immediate feedback and explanations) keep players engaged longer.
What's next for Fact Or F?ck
- Have this app installed on different subreddits, right now it's only being used in the official subreddit of the game.
- Adding multiplayer modes where friends can challenge each other in real time.
- Developing streaks, badges, and rewards to increase player retention.
