Inspiration

In a world overloaded with information on the internet, the ability to discern fact from fiction is paramount. The rise of misinformation and fake news has made it challenging for individuals to trust the information they encounter online and on many social media platforms such as instagram, twitter, and many more. Inspired by the need for a reliable tool that permits users to fact-check information on the fly, our team embarked on the journey to create the Fact Checker Chrome Extension.

What it does

Fact Checker is a powerful Chrome extension designed to provide users with instant fact-checking capabilities. The user-friendly interface allows individuals to easily copy and paste information from any source online directly into the extension. Leveraging well built code and a vast database of credible sources, Fact Checker analyzes the input and provides users with accurate information about the veracity of the content.

How we built it

The Fact Checker Chrome Extension was built using Python for backend processing, React for the frontend interface, and integrated with the OpenAI API for natural language processing. The Python backend analyzed user-inputted information, while React provided a user-friendly interface for seamless interaction. OpenAI's API enhanced language processing capabilities validated information against a database of reliable sources obtained through a search API.

Challenges we ran into

Developing an effective fact-checking tool posed several challenges. One major hurdle was ensuring the extension's speed and efficiency, enabling users to obtain results in real-time. Additionally, curating a comprehensive database of reliable sources required meticulous attention to detail. Overcoming these challenges demanded a collaborative effort and a deep dive into the intricacies of information validation.

We take immense pride in creating a tool that empowers individuals to take control of the information they consume. Our achievement lies not only in the development of a functional Chrome extension but also in the curation of a trustworthy database. Seeing Fact Checker in action, providing users with accurate fact-check results, is a testament to our team's dedication to truth and accuracy in the digital age.

What we learned

The development of Fact Checker was a tremendous learning experience for our team. We honed our skills in data analysis, machine learning, and frontend development. Navigating the complexities of misinformation and understanding the importance of maintaining an unbiased and comprehensive source database deepened our understanding of the challenges in the realm of information validation.

What's next for Fact Checker

The journey doesn't end here for Fact Checker. We envision continuous refinement and expansion of the extension's capabilities. The user feedback will be instrumental in fine-tuning the extension's user interface and addressing any potential areas of improvement. Our goal is to make Fact Checker an indispensable tool in the fight against misinformation, fostering a more informed and discerning online community. As a final touch, we would like to make the UI/UX better and perhaps implement a dark mode.
