We created a facility booking Telegram bot for our hall of residence!
In many halls, booking facilities like common areas and sports facilities can be a hassle. In the case of Kent Ridge Hall specifically, there is no standardised procedure. For some facilities, the current system requires residents to make a verbal request to the Student leaders in charge of the respective facilities while other venues require updating an excel sheet. Furthermore, Student leaders were required to manually send a text to the hall group chat to update the other residents every time a venue was booked.
As members of the Kent Ridge hall IT and Automation Committee, while also aligning our project to the problem statement which was to find a problem that impacts residents in our hall and to come up with a solution to it, we decided to create a Telegram bot that will solve this facility booking issue. Our bot simplifies and digitalises the entire process, allowing residents to submit booking requests directly through Telegram, while allowing student users to view and approve requests through the same platform. It then automatically updates all the relevant parties (the resident who submitted the request as well as the other residents) on which venue has been booked for what time slot. Overall, our solution is intuitive, efficient, and streamlines a system that strongly needed modernisation.
