Inspiration
A face score alone gives someone very little to act on. We built FaceRater to connect a visible measurement to its place on the original photo, then help the user explore a practical styling choice. This project is presented by its own product team. It is a consumer web app, not a hackathon entry or an independent review.
What it does
The free scan accepts a front-facing adult portrait or a camera photo. It maps 478 facial landmarks in the browser, calculates a 0–100 photo-geometry score, and opens selected readings and a share card. Focused tools cover face shape, symmetry, canthal tilt, golden-ratio proportions, facial ratios, and frontal jaw balance. The PSL page interprets a named scale rather than inventing a photo-based PSL score.
An optional $17.49 one-time Face Report adds 26 readings across five illustrated facial regions, diagrams on the user’s own photo, explanations, a personal styling plan, two-photo comparison, a manual color studio, six AI hairstyle concepts, and a downloadable PDF. There is no subscription.
How we built it
The application uses React, TypeScript, TanStack, Better Auth, Drizzle with PostgreSQL, and Cloudflare Workers with private R2 storage. Browser-side landmark measurements are separate from server-side report ownership, verified payment entitlements, and queued image-generation jobs. The scoring formula and pricing catalog are versioned and reused across the tools and reports.
Challenges
The most useful work was making the output inspectable: a measurement needs clear endpoints and an explanation, not just an attractive chart. We also separated free measurement from paid generation so retries, concurrent requests, and temporary provider problems do not blur billing and delivery states. Report access is authenticated rather than making personal photo URLs public.
What we learned
Lighting, camera distance, expression, and head angle affect the photograph. A geometry score is not a universal beauty judgment. Generated hairstyle images are styling concepts and may change facial details; they should be compared with the original, not treated as evidence that a facial measurement improved.
