Inspiration helpful for everyone Our inspiration was to make college management easier, faster, and more efficient. Traditional attendance systems require teachers to call out students' names or mark attendance manually, which takes time and can lead to errors.

We wanted to develop a Face Recognition Attendance System that helps colleges automate attendance and manage student and teacher records in one place. Our goal is to reduce paperwork, save teachers' time, and make academic record management more convenient.

What it does it can easy to manage records The Face Recognition Attendance System provides a centralized platform for managing college records and academic activities.

  • Face recognition: Uses face-recognition models to support identifying registered students.
  • Attendance management: Helps record, view, and monitor student attendance.
  • Student and teacher management: Organizes student profiles and teacher information.
  • Lecture management: Helps manage lecture-related information.
  • Examination management: Provides modules for exams, questions, marks, and submissions.
  • Notes and reports: Supports sharing or managing study notes and viewing attendance reports.
  • Database management: Uses MySQL to store structured college information.

How we built it with proper setup give below We built the project using modern web technologies and a MySQL database to create a user-friendly college management system.

Technologies used Frontend: React, TypeScript, and Vite for building the web interface. Backend: Node.js with Express for handling API requests and database operations. Database: MySQL for storing student details, attendance, teachers, exams, and other records. Face recognition: @vladmandic/face-api with face detection and recognition models. Development tools: Visual Studio Code, MySQL Workbench, and npm

Challenges we ran into app or web server We built the project using modern web technologies and a MySQL database to create a user-friendly college management system.

Development tools: Visual Studio Code, MySQL Workbench, and npm Setup process Extract the ZIP file and open the project folder in VS Code. Execute mysql-local/schema.sql in MySQL Workbench to create the database and tables. Configure the database credentials in the backend .env file. Install dependencies and start the backend server on port 4000. Install the frontend dependencies and start the Vite development server. Open the frontend URL in a browser and test the available features. The project separates the frontend, backend, and database, making it easier to maintain and improve the system.

Accomplishments that we're proud of implementing this project During development, some of the main challenges included:

  • Database integration: Connecting the web application to MySQL and configuring database credentials correctly.
  • Face recognition: Loading the recognition models and handling camera input for reliable face detection.
  • Attendance accuracy: Ensuring that recognized students are associated with the correct attendance records.
  • Record management: Organizing students, teachers, lectures, exams, and attendance data in a consistent structure.
  • Server configuration: Running the frontend and backend on separate development servers and ensuring API communication works correctly.
  • Feature completion: Ensuring that all pages display the correct information and that attendance reports and student lists work as expected. These challenges helped us understand the importance of proper database design, testing, and integration between different parts of a web application.

What's next for Face recognition attendance system for easy way to manage college records Our future goal is to make the Face Recognition Attendance System more accurate, secure, and useful for colleges.

  • Real-time attendance: Improve camera-based identification and automatic attendance recording.
  • Liveness detection: Add safeguards against photos or videos being used to impersonate students.
  • Advanced reports: Generate attendance summaries by student, class, subject, and date.
  • Notifications: Alert students about low attendance and upcoming examinations.
  • Cloud deployment: Make the system securely accessible to authorized users from different devices.
  • Mobile-friendly design: Improve usability on smartphones and tablets.
  • Data security: Add strong access controls, secure storage, backups, and appropriate protection for facial data.
  • Complete testing: Finish and verify the remaining roadmap tasks, including class-specific lists, attendance charts, tracking displays, and sample-data setup. Our long-term vision is to create a smart college management platform that automates routine tasks, improves record accuracy, and helps institutions manage their academic activities efficiently.
