Education Track

We were brainstorming ideas of how to best fit this hackathon into our schedule and still be prepared for our exams the following Monday. We knew that we wanted something where we could learn new skills but also something useful in our daily lives. Specifically, we wanted to create a tool that could help transcribe our lectures and combine them into easy-to-access formats.

What it does

This tool allows users to upload video files or links and get a PDF transcript of it. This creates an easy way for users who prefer to get the big ideas to save time and skip the lectures as well as act as a resource for open-note exams.

How we built it

The website is a react.js application whilst the backend is made up of Firebase for the database, and an express API to access the Google Speech to Text API to help with our transcribing.

Challenges we ran into

Both of us being novices to using APIs such as Google's we spent quite a bit of time troubleshooting and figuring out how they worked. This left us with less time than desired but we were able to complete a web app that captures the big picture of our app.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are both proud that we were able to learn so many new skills in so little time and are excited to continue this project and create new ones as well. And most importantly we had fun!

What we learned

We learned quite a lot this weekend.

  • Google Cloud APIs
  • Firebase
  • WikiRaces (How to get from Tigers to Microphones in record time)
  • Having Fun!

What's next for EZNotes

We hope to finish out the app's other features as well as create a summarizing tool using AI so that the notes are even more useful.
