Inspiration

Most small shops don't accept credit card - causing inconvenience for customers and less revenue for shopkeepers. However, one thing almost all shopkeepers has is a smart phone. We want to take advantage of this tool to help improve the shopping experience.

What it does

EZCard is an app that allows shopkeepers to enter the payment amount, take a picture of the credit card, and it uses image detection to extract card information, sends a request to the credit card company (i.e. Visa, MasterCard), who then sends an OTP to the cardholder's phone so they can confirm the purchase.

How we built it

We developed the mobile app in Android Studio, using our past experience with app development as well as open source projects such as Card.io to help us efficiently build this EZCard.

Challenges we ran into

The credit card payment process was a lot more involved than we knew, as we got advice and knowledge from a HackUST mentor. However, after doing more research we still believe in the potential of our app. UI was another difficult aspect of this project, and while our design is not perfect, we feel it is satisfactory for a hackathon.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Integrating Card.io allows our app to really recognize numbers from credit cards - it was exciting to see it work.

What we learned

Things are easier with a good team. Each of us seemed driven and willing to work hard on this project! And sleep is important.

What's next for EZCard

We want to expand on the capabilities of the app - we've only implemented the core functions. For example, we want to give shopkeepers the ability to query through past transactions and perhaps track trends in their customers. We truly believe this is a promising and high-potential area that the fintech has yet to delve into - and we're excited to pioneer the effort!
