Inspiration
A while ago on TikTok, we saw a video of a vision-impaired person describing how she identified items using a pen-like device that announced the name of the item. This inspired us to create a mobile app that has the same functionality at a more cost-effective and accessible price point.
What it does
EyeSight allows users to ASSIGN labels to NFC Tag stickers, SCAN them, and have their iOS device announce that label back to them.
How we built it
We built EyeSight using swiftUI in XCode, relying on iOS Automation for the NFC scanning and writing functionality.
Challenges we ran into
NFC Capabilities were unavailable on our version of xCode, so we were unable to easily implement the writing and scanning features of Eyesight using the resources available online.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This was our first endeavor into developing with SwiftUI, but we managed to create a working prototype by supplementing the NFC capabilities with Automation! For a two-person team working remotely, we are very proud of our high production value demo video!
What we learned
We learned how to implement Core NFC via UIKit embedded in SwiftUI as well as NFC Capabilities (although we were unable to directly test it).
What's next for EyeSight
With continued development, we hope to increase functionality, such as assigning voice labels to tags, and bring EyeSight to other platforms, such as Android.
Acknowledgements
We'd like to thank the HtN team for organizing this amazing experience! We truly appreciated the opportunity to learn from the mentors and sponsors during Gear Up week as well as the events on the weekend!
