Inspiration

In Canada, exposure to screens is inevitable. Users spend an average of 11 hours per day, with youth contributing up to more than 13 hours a day. Higher screen times can cause dry eyes, eye sensitivity, blurred vision, hinder productivity, and lowers overall mood. How do we solve this growing epidemic? With this, we were inspired to create an app that helps users track and moderate screen time.

What it does

EyeGuy is your mobile application to help regulate your screen time to improve your eye-health and overall well-being. Inspired by the 20-20-20 rule, Ian (your personal virtual helper), would send you notifications every 20 minutes of screen time with a prompt that would incentivise users to look or do something 20 feet away from your screen, for 20 seconds. You are then rewarded with points that can be exchanged as accessories for Ian to wear! Don’t have the access or the resources to do a prompt? No worries! You have the ability to reroll your prompt to have a more favorable task according to your needs.

EyeGuy has a fun, comfy, and friendly aesthetic to provide an encapsulating experience that will entice young audiences, or for people who want to begin protecting their eyes in interactive ways.

How we built it

We chose Android studio in Java as our platform for full stack app development. It was beginner friendly and included large amounts of documentation.

We also used Figma to create the wireframe, and design layout of the application.

Challenges we ran into

Challenges we faced are being able to find articles related to Java-related subjects, as most of them. Due to this, we were unable to aggregate the user stats information needed for the app usage screen.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As a team, our proudest accomplishment was being able to create this app within a short timeframe. We implemented 90% of the features we set out to complete, and made a fun and usable app.

What we learned

Since no one on our team was an app developer, we learned how to use Andriod Studio and Figma on the job.

What's next for eyeGuy

We hope to provide health tips regarding sleep and physical activity into the app. We also hope to continuously expand EyeGuy as a collaborative gaming-health app, where there are more accessories and interactions with Ian and more personal features and prompts for the user to maintain their health.
