Inspiration
Over recent years, the number of individuals affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s disease has steadily risen. Intriguingly, recent research indicates that people who lose their first home—often due to economic pressures when selling their starter home to purchase another—develop dementia earlier and at an accelerated rate. While we commonly associate dementia exclusively with older adults, who represent roughly 16.8% of the U.S. population, the concept of mental age is frequently overlooked. There’s a poignant saying: “A young man starts dying when he stops dreaming.” In other words, when considering mental health and cognitive aging, the affected population may be even larger. Many elders, before their final days, deeply wish to revisit their first home—a place where their most precious memories were created. Eye-to-home seeks to begin this meaningful journey back.
What it does
Leveraging augmented reality (AR), Eye-to-home captures real-world environments and forwards these scenes to a backend service, where Gemini 2.5 analyzes and summarizes the visual data into detailed textual descriptions. These textual summaries are then artistically reimagined by FreePik AI. This dual process ensures significant preservation of memory-rich details. Over time, as more data accumulates, a detailed 3D sketch of a person’s cherished home gradually emerges, allowing users to relive treasured moments vividly.
How we built it
We integrated Gemini 2.5 and FreePik AI using Flask for the backend, with RealityKit handling the augmented reality functionalities on iOS devices.
Challenges we ran into
Generating interest in our specialized tech stack proved difficult, and the workload was primarily carried by a single individual.
Accomplishments that we’re proud of
Completing a fully functional MVP, despite resource constraints, marks our greatest achievement.
What we learned
Even a single pair of determined hands can bring countless dreams to life.
What’s next for Eye-to-home
Our goal is to build a lasting archive of cherished memories, preserving them for future generations to explore and cherish.
