Extra Number 1 is based on a true story.

About a year ago, I—Dave—was unexpectedly cast as a background extra in a Christmas movie alongside my wife, Angelie, who is also featured in this film. What started as a fun, simple experience quickly turned into something life-changing.

On the first night of filming, we found ourselves standing center-frame with Santa and the lead actors, doing multiple takes under bright lights and swirling artificial snow. At the end of the night, the casting team asked us to return for another full week of filming. That single moment opened a new door for me.

During that week on set, I met the director, crew members, and fellow actors. I saw filmmaking from the inside—the wardrobe chaos, the retakes, the long nights, the energy, the humor, the teamwork, and the genuine sense of community. For the first time in my life, I saw what happens behind the camera, and something inside me lit up.

That spark pushed me toward storytelling.

I went home inspired and wrote my first full-length screenplay using ChatGPT. Through revisions and feedback from others, I realized AI wasn’t replacing creativity—it was unlocking creativity I didn’t realize I had.

And at 49 years old, I discovered a passion I never knew was possible.

That discovery led me deep into the world of AI filmmaking. I taught myself Veo 3, Sora 2, Nano Banana, ComfyUI, ElevenLabs, Topaz Video, Filmora, LTX Studio, Google Cloud workflows, and more. Shot by shot, tool by tool, I built my first full 20-minute narrative short film.

Extra Number 1 is the result of that journey. A story about ordinary people realizing they matter. A story about second chances. A story about discovering purpose later in life, when you least expect it.

Since completing this project, I’ve written a full-length screenplay, drafted four additional feature scripts, and begun developing several more AI-powered film concepts.

My goal is to release two full-length AI films next year — with more to come.

Extra Number 1 is just the beginning.

Following up on my earlier post — the interview I recorded with Jeff Deverett from the Indie Film Community is now officially live.

In this episode, Jeff, Daniel Coté, and I talk about the fast-moving world of AI filmmaking, what has changed since our last conversation, and how tools like Nano Banana, Sora, and Veo 3.1 shaped the creation of Extra Number 1. We also get into the challenges, the surprises, and where this technology is heading for indie creators.

I just wrapped up an interview with Jeff Deverett, the creator of the Indie Film Community channel on YouTube. We had a great conversation about the making of Extra Number 1, the AI-driven workflow behind it, and the rapidly growing landscape of AI filmmaking — a space Jeff is very supportive of.

The episode should be released in the coming weeks, and I’ll share the link here as soon as it goes live.

Thanks for following along on this journey! More updates soon.
