Inspiration
For our unique approach to implementing extended reality in education, we considered raising awareness about a pressing issue that affects not only the survival of our planet but also the balance of our ecosystem - the rapid extinction of species. Every day, we are losing a significant number of species due to habitat loss, climate change, pollution, and overexploitation of resources. We are already in the midst of the largest mass extinction event Earth has faced since the loss of the dinosaurs. The loss of species is not just an environmental issue but also a moral one. We have a responsibility to protect and preserve the diversity of life on our planet, not just for ourselves but also for future generations. We shouldn’t have to live in a world where common animals today can only be visualised through augmented reality. Hence, we designed this solution to raise awareness.
What it does
The user is greeted with an audio that welcomes them to ‘A Blast to the Past’. We designed a circular park where the user can see various dinosaurs along with their respective names. Information about a dinosaur will be heard by the user when he stands in front of one, with the camera zooming in for a closer look. Different sounds of each dinosaur growling and roaring can be heard for a more immersive experience. We also added the dodo bird, another infamous species that was driven to extinction by hunting and deforestation.
How we built it
We used Maya for the 3D models and Unity for exporting to VR.
Challenges we ran into
We found it difficult to use MirageXR. This field itself is very new to us, so we worked hard and did our best that we could in these two days.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to produce a VR experience after working for two full nights! :joy:
What we learned
We learned a lot about how to code for AR and VR. We learned how to use Unity and Maya.
What's next for Extinct Animal Park
We plan to add more extinct animals, as well as raise awareness about critically endangered species and what can be done to save them.
