Inspiration
We’re surrounded by constant digital collaboration, yet we lack control over how and when content is shared. Messages and files get lost in threads, sent too early, or delivered without context. The inspiration for Express Vault came from wanting to give users — especially educators, team leads, and remote workers — a way to secure, schedule, and unlock important content inside the Express chat platform itself.
What it does
Express Vault is an Express Add-on that lets users:
- Create time-locked messages or files
- Set group-based triggers (e.g., “unlock when all team members mark ready”)
- Send content that unlocks only when it matters
- Add self-destruct options (disappear after one open or 1 minute) It transforms everyday chat into a smarter, more intentional communication space — without using AI or external tools.
How I built it
Platform: Express Add-on SDK Languages: JavaScript, HTML, CSS Logic: Unlock rules (time, group triggers) are simulated using basic conditional logic and timestamps UI Mock-ups: Created in Canva, using simple 4-panel flow Data: Demo uses local storage to simulate “Vault Drop” creation and unlock behavior Video: Built a clean storyboard walkthrough in Canva with captions and voiceover
Challenges I ran into
- Designing time-based and trigger-based logic without backend complexity
- Creating a strong, polished pitch without a full working prototype
- Making the concept feel intuitive and unique, even without advanced tech
- Staying within 3 minutes while explaining both the problem and the value clearly
Accomplishments that I am proud of
- Created a concept that’s rare, useful, and lightweight
- Designed a clean user flow with mockups and logic that’s ready to build
- Clearly showed technical feasibility without relying on AI
- Positioned the idea as high-impact for teachers, teams, and creators alike
What I have learned
- How to build within the Express SDK
- That a well-scoped idea with strong storytelling can compete without code-heavy complexity
- How to pitch time-based logic in a way that feels helpful, not overwhelming
- The value of building “smart defaults” into collaboration tools
What's next for Express Vault
- Build a working prototype with basic time locks and one-time views
- Add group-based triggers and shared team vaults
- Offer template vaults for repeatable drops (like weekly quizzes or check-ins)
- Explore integration with calendars and notifications inside Express
- Launch a closed beta with educators or project managers
