Inspiration

Passing the I-35 highway is very dangerous, but some people are still willing to take on the risk and cross it. After researching, we realize there is a significant resource imbalance. In this project, we want to let people in West Austin know this situation and sign a petition on building a safer passway for people living on the other side.

What it does

We use the world effect technology to place things in the AR world. In this way, people can realize where the resources are for residents living on both sides of I-35 .

Challenges we ran into

The project we clone is hard to modify, so we end up building everything from scratch.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our team found it very rewarding that we were able to use technology that we were initially unfamiliar with and connect it to an environmental justice that we are very passionate about. Our team has witnessed the inequities caused by resource imbalance and difficulties with acessibilities in public transportation, and we are proud that we were able to showcase it with AR technology that will reach a wider audience.

What we learned

We began by conducting research into accessibility and resource disparities in Austin, and we were very surprised to learn about the economic and racial imbalance caused, in part, by the dividing line of I-35. I-35 not only makes it more dangerous for pedestrians to move from East to West Austin, it also causes resources they need, such as schools, clinics, grocery stores, to be more out of reach, especially for residents of East Austin. We also looked at demographic and economic data of the area and found that Austin was voted the most economically segregated city in the country, an issue exacerbated by the difficulty of crossing the highway.

What's next for

One of our goals is to create more non-clickable assets that represents other distinctive differences like the greater presence of industry and therefore pollution in east Austin. We would also like to add more dimension to our avatars/representatives by including animations, dialogue bubbles, artwork, and make them moveable to make the overall experience more immersive.

Some of our reach goals include creating a scavenger hunt in east Austin that highlights current disparities and ways that area could be improved through the use of VPS technology, as well as involving more Assets that would represent how greater public transportation infrastructure could transform the area.
