Inspiration
We set out to build an interactive map of Charlottesville for incoming students, alumni, or more to learn about the University of Virginia’s rich history, but I didn’t stop there. Through the development of the project, I realized a conventional map was too static. I wanted students to explore the world led by their curiosity and the history will follow. This inspiration led to the creation of ExplorifAi.
What it does
ExplorifAi is an AI powered dynamic and interactive map allowing students to explore the globe and learn about the history of an area in seconds. Our mission is to make learning about history engaging, interactive, and accessible to everyone.
How we built it
The application was built using Django with an SqLite database, python backend, and HTML/CSS/JS frontend. The application used the Google Maps API for map interactivity and perplexity for history discovery.
Challenges we ran into
There were some initial troubles with setting up the project in Django and especially setting up the google cloud platform account. I have used google maps in the past so was able to work through these problems effectively.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I have built a semester-long project in the past with Django so I was excited to learn from that experience, and after a lot of trial and error, produce an MVP in a day. What we learned I learned a lot about the client-server model through this application and the constraints of a secure application.
What's next for ExplorifAi
I envision ExplorifAi becoming a community driven platform, where students can explore the world with a click of a button and see what places others are exploring. I can see the markers linked to forums. I want to give people the feeling of uncovering secrets like the scientists and architects did when uncovering this history.
