All these containment measures to prevent the spread of the virus will have a significant impact on the industry in the Western Balkan especially in tourism which directly contributes 15% to overall GDP of the Western Balkans, and it supports a multitude of jobs and industries, accounting for around 550 000 jobs in 2019 (RCC Int., 2020). This economic shock will affect negatively jobs in the tourism industry and have knock-on effects for other downstream sectors.

A rapid return is essential not only for people of the Western Balkans to begin enjoying travel again but also for the businesses that have suffered a tremendous impact. However, as with other sectors, the tourism industry will take on a "new normal," where virtual reality will likely play two pivotal roles: a powerful destination marketing tool to entice people to travel again, and a temporary sampler of a destination for those who are not yet willing to travel.
