Inspiration

We were inspired to tackle the question of how to make education more engaging, especially for younger children. With teachers facing the challenge to adapt curriculum to this new learning environment, we wanted to come up with an app that would help both parents and teachers foster an engaging learning environment.

What it does

We created a game that would allow users to learn about the cultures and histories of different countries, as well as a platform for users to share their thoughts and questions regarding the content covered in different lessons. Through focusing on four skills: Deep Listening, Active Reading, Analytical Observations, and Empathetic Understand, each lesson and readings are accompanied by activities that build these skills. Where it is posting a question and listening to the perspectives of others, or writing a discussion post on some of your observations, each activity works to engage the user in different modes of thinking. With the way that the app is designed, we nested different aspects of a topic together, so the user can choose what area they want to explore next, simulating the foundations of exploratory learning.

How we built it

We used Figma to build the prototype.

Challenges we ran into

This was our first times really using Figma, so understanding the software and learning more about UI/UX design was difficult. Also, formatting and laying out elements and learning how to create swipe-able galleries and page as difficult. Making decisions about formatting and understanding user-experience was difficult because none of us have experience with that field, so we were all learning on the job. Branding and creating a cohesive unit was also really challenging because we didn't have the technical skills to accomplish many of our ideas.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we are able to make something. There are a lot of areas that we can improve on, especially on the UI/UX aspect, but the experience exposed us to a new area and helped built some vocabulary when talking about UX.

What we learned

We learned a lot about using Figma, about how to think about the user's experience and the different aspects of design that we need to take into consideration. This entire project was a learning process for all of us.

What's next for Explore

There is a lot of work that needs to be done around making the app more accessible to people. Also, creating a cohesive brand for the app will also help with the flow. Also, thinking about how users can engage in meaningful and impactful ways with each other through the game, is definitely something that can be continually explored.
