Inspiration

Many people are becoming more health-conscious and are interested in trying new foods that are both healthy and flavorful. Cultural foods often incorporate a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, making them a great choice for people who want to eat healthy and explore new flavors.

What it does

Our website offers food recommendations for exploring cultural foods and provides users with suggestions for dishes, cuisines, and restaurants that are representative of various cultures and regions around the world. Overall, the goal of the website is to inspire users to explore and appreciate the rich diversity of global food cultures, and to help them discover new and delicious foods that they might not have tried otherwise.

How we built it

We built the website by utilizing a dataset containing information about various cultural foods, such as their ingredients, cooking methods, and cultural significance. Using the Flask web framework in Python, we created a web application that generates a recipe.

Challenges we ran into

We encountered difficulties in getting Flask to run properly, which prevented us from being able to view our website. Despite our efforts to troubleshoot the issue, we were unable to resolve the problem, and as a result, we were unable to test or deploy our web application until very late. In addition, we experienced issues with connecting our Bootstrap template to our HTML file, which resulted in the website not rendering correctly. Despite attempting to adjust the code and debug the issue, we were unable to establish a successful connection between the two components. This made it challenging for us to style and format the website as intended, and we were had to proceed with a more simple interface.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully launched the website despite our severe time constraints and issues with getting started, and we were able to connect the backend to the frontend.

What we learned

We learned how to use datasets as well as how to implement flask with python, as we were most familiar with Java.

What's next for EXPLORE-Eats

We will have recommendations based on user preferences, dietary restrictions, location, or other factors, save any recipes that the user likes. EXPLORE-Eats would also provide information about the history and cultural significance of the foods and cuisines being recommended, as well as tips for cooking or ordering them.
