What I learnt about XR:
XR is an umbrella term for all technologies that are immersive; such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) as well as those that are still to be created. These immersive realities extend reality that we experience by blurring the lines between virtual and real and create an immersive experience for us. The worlds they create, although virtual seem almost real. Hence, there is no limit to what we can achieve with these realities.
Augmented Reality is about creating augmented experiences i.e virtual objects are overlaid onto real ones. Prime example of AR are snapchat and Instagram filters. These experiences are accessed through smart devices.
Virtual Reality is about immersing users into a completely virtual world. VR gaming is booming at the moment with several companies coming up with wonderful gamin experiences. VR has a lot of scope in all the fields; VR can be used to virtually train doctors, pilots, the army and what not without having any effect on the real world. The possibilities are endless.
Mixed reality is a newer immersive reality and only briefly studied/explore. In mixed reality, digital and real-world objects co-exist and can interact with one another in real-time. A headset is involved.
Once better ways to implement these immersive technologies occur, the world will see endless possibilities in all fields. Companies are already using these to market goods - Ikea uses AR to help customers view furniture at their home; the Entertainment industry is benefitting out of VR experiences; Marketing via XR has opened up several avenues.
Really excited to dive deeper into XR and see find what the future holds.
I've also created a graphic distinguishing the various types of realities.
