We were inspired by a simple but widespread problem: many students struggle to understand complex topics because explanations are often too technical, too generic, or not adapted to their learning level. We wanted to build a tool that explains anything the way a great teacher would—clearly, patiently, and tailored to the learner. Gemini AI made it possible to turn this idea into a personalized learning experience for students everywhere.
What it does
Explainly is an AI-powered learning app that helps students understand any topic through clear, age-appropriate explanations. Users can choose their education level, ask questions, and receive step-by-step explanations enriched with analogies, mnemonics, structured breakdowns, and visual learning cues. The experience is fully interactive, mobile-friendly, and designed to make learning simple and engaging.
How we built it
Explainly was built as a lightweight, mobile-friendly web app with a strong focus on user experience and clarity. Gemini AI was used to design the explanation logic and structure, allowing the app to simulate intelligent, adaptive teaching behavior. The app dynamically adjusts explanation depth based on the learner’s selected level and presents content in a step-by-step, high-retention format. The interface was designed to be simple, interactive, and accessible, ensuring that users can focus on learning without distractions.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was ensuring that explanations remained accurate, detailed, and relevant without overwhelming the learner. Another challenge was designing the system to behave like a trained teaching assistant even when external API access was limited. This required carefully structuring explanation logic so that the app still felt intelligent, consistent, and useful during demonstrations.

What's next for Explainly

The long-term goal is to make Explainly a global learning companion that helps students understand any topic at their own pace, regardless of background or level.
