Inspiration
Complex information is everywhere. laws, policies, technical documents but most people don’t have the time or background to decode them. I saw how important decisions are often made with partial understanding, especially around legal and technical topics in Africa. ExplainIt was inspired by the need to turn complexity into clarity without losing accuracy.
What it does
ExplainIt is an AI-powered explanation system that transforms complex content into simple, structured and actionable explanations. Given any dense or technical text, ExplainIt produces: A clear, plain-language summary Detailed explanations of key ideas Important concepts explained in simple terms Why the information matters in the real world Actionable takeaways for users It is designed for non-experts who need clarity fast, while still being accurate enough for professionals.
How I built it
ExplainIt was built using: HTML & CSS for the user interface JavaScript for client-side interaction PHP for backend processing MySQL for data storage and logging Gemini AI for generating structured explanations using a custom system prompt
The system uses a strict explanation framework to ensure outputs are consistent, readable and easy to understand across different types of content (legal, technical, academic).
Challenges I ran into
Designing prompts that simplify content without losing meaning Preventing the AI from repeating original text verbatim Balancing simplicity for non-experts with accuracy for professionals Structuring explanations in a way that feels natural and useful Ensuring clarity even when the input text is poorly written or incomplete
