AI is becoming an incredibly powerful learning tool, but there is a hidden problem: getting a good explanation is not the same as understanding something.
A learner can read an explanation, recognize the terminology, and feel confident — only to discover later that they cannot explain the concept themselves.
We wanted to build something that closes that gap.
The Idea
ExplainBack is an AI-powered understanding verifier.
Instead of simply asking AI to explain a topic, ExplainBack asks the learner to explain the concept back in their own words.
The AI then analyzes the learner's explanation and identifies:
- what they understood correctly;
- what is incomplete;
- what is incorrect;
- possible misconceptions; and
- the most useful next question or challenge.
The goal is not to give the learner another long explanation. The goal is to identify what they actually understand and what they should work on next.
AI can explain anything. Can you?
How It Works
- Choose a concept you want to understand.
- Learn from a concise AI-generated explanation.
- Explain it back using your own words.
- Get an understanding map showing strengths, gaps, and misconceptions.
- Take a targeted challenge designed around the biggest identified gap.
- Explain again and see whether your understanding improves.
This creates a learning loop:
Learn → Explain → Evaluate → Challenge → Explain again
Why We Built It
We wanted to explore a different use of AI in education.
Most AI learning tools optimize for generating answers. ExplainBack focuses on something different: evidence of understanding.
The learner's own explanation becomes the primary signal.
What We Learned
Building ExplainBack has been an opportunity to explore how AI can be used as an evaluator and learning-feedback system rather than simply as a content generator.
We also learned the importance of giving an AI system a clearly defined task, structured evaluation criteria, and useful constraints instead of asking it to make an unrestricted judgment.
Challenges
One of the biggest challenges is making feedback useful without overwhelming the learner.
A good evaluation should distinguish between a minor omission and a genuine misconception. It should also give the learner a concrete next step rather than simply saying that an answer is "wrong."
We therefore designed the experience around specific evidence and targeted follow-up challenges.
Built for Build With AI: Basics
ExplainBack is being developed as a new project for the Build With AI: Basics hackathon, following the competition's required development workflow and Learn Skill Pack.
The project is designed as a focused proof of concept: one clear problem, one core learning loop, and an experience that can be demonstrated end-to-end.
What's Next
The current focus is on making the core understanding loop reliable and intuitive.
Future versions could support:
- longer learning journeys;
- progress tracking across concepts;
- personalized difficulty;
- certification preparation;
- technical interview practice; and
- learning analytics that reveal recurring misconceptions.
ExplainBack is built around a simple idea: don't just ask whether someone read the explanation — give them a chance to prove what they understood.
