Inspiration
I used to copy terminal commands from StackOverflow like a spellbook , no clue what half of them did. I thought, "What if GPT could explain this like a chaotic mentor or a worried grandma?" That’s how Explain Like I’m Root began.
What it does
You paste any terminal command, and it explains it in one of six fun modes: Beginner, GPT, Grandma, Chaos, Shakespeare, or Pilot. Each mode has its own personality, tone, and explanation style , making boring commands kinda fun.
How we built it
Bolt.new to build and deploy super fast HTML/CSS/JS for structure and logic OpenRouter API (GPT) for generating different personality responses Deployed with Netlify in minutes
Challenges we ran into
API quotas were brutal 😵 GPT sometimes gave the same answer no matter the prompt Tuning the personalities to sound right took a ton of trial and error We had only 12 hours, so everything was built under caffeine and chaos
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Got the whole app working and deployed within a day Actually made learning terminal commands fun Had friends test it — and they laughed while learning (win!)
What we learned
How to use Bolt.new for rapid building Prompt design can make or break the app Humor + tech = a powerful combo You don’t need perfect — just start and keep iterating
What's next for Explain Like I'm Root
Add more modes (like Tech Bro, Hacker, ElonGPT 👀) Build a VS Code extension Let users save and share explanations Maybe even explain Git next... (send help)
