Inspiration

As a team of professionals in North America and Europe, we saw early-career peers struggle to find structured, personalized mentorship—many had goals but no clear roadmap to achieve them. Senior colleagues, too, wanted to give back but lacked tools to organize guidance. We built MentorMatch to bridge this gap, rooted in the belief that meaningful 1:1 connections drive career growth.

What it does

MentorMatch connects early-career professionals (0-5 years experience) with senior experts (5+ years) via tailored matching. Users access structured mentorship frameworks, book 30/60-minute video sessions, track milestone progress, exchange feedback, and choose between free/premium tiers for expanded access.

How we built it

We started with user-centric design in Figma, mapping core workflows (matching, scheduling, progress tracking). We built the frontend in React (responsive, desktop-first) and backend in Node.js/Express, using MongoDB for profile/ session data. Firebase synced real-time dashboard updates, and we integrated Calendar API for scheduling & Chart.js for progress visuals.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing dual user views (mentee/mentor) without page reloads required complex state management. We also struggled to design a matching logic that prioritized industry/goal alignment while keeping the UI intuitive—iterating 3x to simplify filters without losing precision.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a seamless toggle between mentee/mentor dashboards, a visual progress tracker that makes goals tangible, and a clear premium/free tier structure that highlights value without confusion. Users can book sessions in one click and access customizable career frameworks—all with intuitive, clean UI.

What we learned

We deepened our understanding of dual-role UX design and the importance of balancing functionality with simplicity. We also learned how to translate business rules (e.g., free tier session limits) into clear, non-intrusive user experiences that encourage (not pressure) premium upgrades.

What's next for this project

We plan to add real-time chat for mentor-mentee communication, integrate external calendar tools (Google/Outlook), and expand industry-specific frameworks (e.g., Mid to Senior Marketing). We’ll also refine the matching logic with user behavior data to boost relevance and launch mobile-responsive optimizations for on-the-go access.
