I was inspired by my determination to recycle and compost the right materials, and my frustration with the current awareness levels around properly sorting trash. I want to spread awareness about the importance of recycling and thought that a silly, fun, and interactive game seemed like a great way to help people test their knowledge. I coded a game using Scratch and embedded it into a website I created using HTML, which contains helpful information about how you can sustainably sort your trash. The resources on the Sustainable Sorting site help to prepare players to win “It’s Not ExPENNsive to be Sustainable” (the associated game that tests your knowledge)! It allows you to learn the basics about what you can and can not recycle, compost, and throw out, while also laughing at an entertaining game that has proven to be slightly rage-inducing. The main challenge I ran into was producing literally anything, since I am working by myself and have never really coded anything before! I think it’s important to not take myself too seriously though, so while I was extremely frustrated with my code, if anything I hope I made you laugh a little bit! I’m proud that I was able to develop something at all, and I did get pretty familiar with basic formatting in HTML. Obviously this particular project is super polished and important, so it really deserves federal funding, but I suppose in the meantime I’ll settle for educating the masses and spreading awareness about saving our dying planet (and a little goof).
