The discovery of planets beyond our solar system has always fascinated me. Every confirmed exoplanet brings us one step closer to answering one of humanity's biggest questions: Are we alone in the universe? When I learned that NASA has made real exoplanet data publicly available, I wanted to explore how artificial intelligence could help analyze this enormous amount of information. That curiosity inspired me to build ExoVision AI.
ExoVision AI is a machine learning project that classifies potential exoplanets using real NASA datasets. The project begins by cleaning and preprocessing the data, handling missing values, and selecting the most relevant features. I then trained and evaluated multiple machine learning models to identify which one performed best for exoplanet classification. To make the results more useful, I also included performance metrics and visualizations that explain how the model makes predictions instead of treating it as a black box.
Building this project taught me much more than just coding. I learned how to work with real scientific datasets, prepare data for machine learning, compare different classification algorithms, evaluate model performance using metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score, and understand the importance of explainable AI in scientific research.
One of the biggest challenges was working with real-world data. The dataset contained missing values, imbalanced classes, and many features that required careful preprocessing before training the model. Choosing the right algorithm and improving the model's performance also required several rounds of experimentation and testing. These challenges helped me develop better problem-solving skills and a deeper understanding of machine learning.
This project is not just about predicting exoplanets—it is about demonstrating how AI can support scientific discovery. I hope ExoVision AI inspires more students to explore the intersection of astronomy, data science, and artificial intelligence, and shows how technology can help us better understand our universe.
