Inspiration
Exoplanets are planets in distant stellar systems. Advances in space telescopes have led to the discovery of hundreds of these planets in the last decade, some of which are potentially habitable.
What it does
'Exoplanet of the Day' is a Twitter bot that promotes astronomy by providing animated visualizations and stats about a single exoplanet each day using time series transit brightness measurements.
How we built it
We made use of the lightkurve library which provides a nice interface for exploring data from NASA's TESS and Kepler space telescopes. We generate figures with matplotlib and publish them via Twitter's API.
What's next for Exoplanet of the Day
Eventually we'd like the Twitter bot to respond to requests from users to look up particular exoplanets in the database.
