Inspiration
Financial teams still spend too much time manually downloading, reviewing, and comparing reports. We built Exia to automate that process and turn financial reports into actionable insights.
What it does
Exia automatically receives financial reports by email, extracts key financial data, analyses trends and risks, and displays insights on a dashboard.
How we built it
We used Gmail API and Google Cloud Pub/Sub to trigger a FastAPI backend when reports arrive. The backend processes PDF and Excel files, runs financial analysis, generates AI insights, and sends the results to a React/Vite dashboard.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenges were automating Gmail attachment retrieval, handling different financial report formats, and keeping AI-generated insights reliable and explainable.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built an end-to-end workflow that starts from email instead of requiring manual uploads. We also designed Exia with privacy by design, including data minimisation, restricted file access, PII masking/redaction, secure storage, and clear data retention controls.
What we learned
We learned that effective financial AI requires more than an LLM. Automation, privacy, structured calculations, explainability, and user experience are equally important.
What's next for Exia
We plan to add deeper client-specific analysis, custom KPIs, forecasting, stronger anomaly detection, and integrations with accounting and ERP systems.
