Inspiration
After just four weeks of college, we've already seen how easy it is to get caught up in homework and clubs and lose track of personal health. It also doesn't help that working out isn't most people's first choice activity, especially if it means making a lonely trip to the gym. However, finding someone on your campus who exercises at the same times and likes doing the same types of activities is time consuming and oftentimes seems near impossible, which is why we developed Exerswipe!
What it does
When you first start using Exerswipe, it will ask you to authenticate with your university email and complete a short quiz detailing information about yourself and your workout habits. The app will then suggest people for you who go to the same school and have similar experience levels and exercise preferences. If you see someone you'd like to work out with, simply swipe right. If they swipe back, the app will let you message them and set up a workout together!
How we built it
We used HTML, JavaScript, and CSS to build a webapp version of Exerswipe, and Apache Cordova to turn it into an Android app.
Challenges we ran into
Everyone on our team was new to JavaScript, so it took us some time to learn how to animate elements and incorporate transitions. We also had some trouble using Git to share code.
What's next for Exerswipe
Our demo app has a fixed set of profiles, so we need to create and manage a dynamic database of profiles. Additionally, we want to work on optimizing our matching algorithm by adjusting the weights of different variables based on which ones users care about more.
