Executive Action

Inspiration

To inspire meaningful responses to initiatives from the Executive Branch that threaten civil rights, environmental protection, and social welfare we have created a utility that not only informs denizens of the United States about initiatives but also connects them to resources showing the impact of public response.

What it does

Aggregates accurate and unbiased information about the Trump-Pence administration election promises, the progress towards making those initiatives a reality, and information about what denizens are doing in response.

How we built it

Built with Webpack, with React.JS as a front-end framework and Firebase for the backend. The overwhelming majority of our data is driven via Firebase.

Challenges we ran into

Presenting a large amount of information and connecting the initiatives to the counter-initiatives without overwhelming users. Our goal was to maintain objectivity, but provide users with holistic information about issues, enabling users to pursue a course of protest if they desire.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Successfully building, testing, populating and deploying a fully functional website on an independent domain in less than 8 hours.

What we learned

Information about the Javascript ecosystem, ES6 vs. ES5, Separation of concerns in React.JS (presentation vs. smart components), incorporating functional styles (map/filter/reduce), and various alternative style solutions (inline & SASS). We have also gained considerable experience with rapid collaborative development using version control and consistent data flow conventions. We also became more intimately familiar with the events happening in our own country.

What's next for Executive Action

Keller will administrate this website and continue development, with the goal of scaling to meet the breadth of the Trump-Pence administration's initiatives. We will be adding social integration (Facebook/Twitter), submission forms, as well as a moderation portal for approving submissions, and a formalized rubric for evaluating sources.
