Inspiration
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that, globally 1/3 food produced for consumption never get eaten by us. Food waste has been such a Global issue that relatively been paid little attention to, there's still lot of people around us who go to bed with a hungry stomach everyday, yet we have completely neglected that fact. Not to mention the environmental impact of food waste in current scenario and in the future.
What it does
Excessery is an app which tackles the issue of food waste by connecting restaurants, shops, cafes, and grocery stores that have surplus foods (at the end of the day) to people willing to buy it at a discounted price, so it prevents the foods from being thrown away.
Save foods, save wallet and save planet, all at the same time!
Key features:
- Notification feature, which will remind them every time their favorite restaurants have surplus foods with discount prices.
- Food stock update in real-time, so that user can check how many foods are available now.
- Donation feature, so they can help to buy the surplus food and donate it to people in needs.
- Review system, in which they can check the quality of the foods they want to buy.
- Food Label for every restaurants, whether it’s halal or vegetarian.
- Digital Badge/Trophy to encourage and motivate the users in reducing food waste.
How we built it
Our project Excessery is crafted with love. The application itself is being built by using flutter. So we do have the flexibility to have cross-platform interface in the future! For the backend, we're using Firebase to store the information about the restaurants, charities and orders. The authentication of our app is being served via Firebase Authentication.
Challenges we ran into
We had teammates from 3 different countries and so it was a tough task to manage everything including timezones, cultures etc. Another hurdle for us was that we all had different tech stacks so we decided to go with the one in which everyone can contribute to.

We ship on time.
What we learned
A lot of things both summed up in technical & non-technical ways. But in brief, we learned how to set up Flutter on our system, UI/UX designing, implementing the complex UI & also not to forget, Firebase, which holds the backend of our project.
What's next for Excessery
We just really want this project to be a real app and have an impact on reducing food waste! Still we would love to make it more scalable & cross-platform so that the user interaction increases & we can help minimize this food waste and hunger together :)
