Inspiration
Studying is better with friends. I wanted to bring that experience together with an AI tutor that everyone could talk to.
That idea became ExamCat: a social studying app where students join a room with their friends and Junko, a cute AI cat who studies alongside them. Everyone can ask questions, hear the explanations, and learn together in one shared voice conversation.
Imagine a group of friends preparing for the same exam. Instead of each person opening a separate ChatGPT conversation, they bring Junko into their study session. The AI becomes part of the group.
That shared experience is the heart of ExamCat.
What it does
ExamCat combines multiplayer studying with tools that help students understand their course material.
- Study with friends and Junko: Join a shared voice room where the whole group can talk with the same AI tutor.
- Study solo: Have a one-on-one voice study session with Junko.
- Turn lecture slides into flashcards and quizzes: Upload class material and use it to practice with flashcards and unlimited quizzes.
- Turn study material into AI podcasts: Listen to explanations in a conversational format. This has become one of our users’ favorite features.
- Explore 3D maps and diagrams: Give students another way to understand concepts visually.
Students can prepare their materials, practice independently, and invite friends to study together in the same app.
How I built it
I built ExamCat as a native iOS app using SwiftUI, with Supabase as the database, Mixpanel for product analytics, and RevenueCat for subscription management.
As a solo founder, I need to spend my time improving the experience students come for. RevenueCat has helped me manage subscriptions in one place and track trials, paying subscribers, and revenue as the app grows.
The most technically demanding part was bringing multiple people and an AI tutor into the same live voice experience. The interaction needs to feel natural: friends should be able to study together, ask Junko questions, and hear responses without delays breaking the flow.
Challenges and what I learned
Building a social app taught me that the experience depends on how well everything works together.
With live group voice and AI, latency becomes part of the product experience. I had to focus on making the conversation feel smooth, fast, and reliable enough for a real study session.
The design was equally important. ExamCat has several study tools, but students need to understand where to start, how to talk to Junko, and how to bring a friend into the room. That pushed me to keep the interface clean and the core actions intuitive.
My biggest lesson has been that the social experience deserves just as much attention as the AI itself. The tutor provides help; the friends give students another reason to show up.
Early traction
ExamCat launched this month and has been live for less than a month. At the time of writing, our RevenueCat dashboard shows:
- 339 new customers in the last 28 days.
- 350 active customers in the last 28 days.
- 7 active trials.
- 3 active subscriptions.
- $100 in revenue in the last 28 days.
We are seeing new trial starts every day. Students are messaging us, joining our Discord, sharing feedback, and inviting their friends.
Those conversations are what make this feel real to me. People are finding ExamCat, using it to study, and bringing other people into the experience.
How we are growing
I am building the app and doing the distribution myself. I create 6–12 videos every day for Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts. I have also hired a small group of 3 micro UGC creators to make content about ExamCat. In the past 3 weeks I've myself gotten 900k+ views on IG alone (@stooodent26 is my username).
That content is bringing students into the app, and the social experience gives them a reason to invite their friends. An invitation helps someone join a study session that is already happening.
I believe that connection between discovery and studying together can become a powerful source of growth.
What is next
My goal is to reach $10,000 MRR within the next two months. It is ambitious, and we are still early, but the student feedback and daily trial activity give me the conviction to keep pushing.
The focus now is to make group studying with Junko even smoother, keep improving the tools students love, and keep showing up every day to introduce ExamCat to more people.
I want ExamCat to become the app students open when they say, “Let’s study together.”
