Inspiration

Every year, millions of brilliant students underperform on crucial exams, not due to lack of intelligence, but due to lack of access. A bright student in rural Nigeria shouldn’t miss university because they couldn’t afford exam prep materials. A student in Kenya shouldn’t be held back because their internet access is limited or they can’t afford another app.

We realized the answer was already in their pocket: WhatsApp. Our goal was simple, use the world’s most familiar messaging app to deliver high-quality, AI-powered, exam-focused education.

What It Does

Examinator transforms WhatsApp into a personal exam prep tutor:

  • Smart Practice: Practice real past questions (2015–2024) by topic or by year
  • AI Tutoring: Ask any academic question and get real-time explanations
  • Performance Tracking: Personalized insights and weak-area targeting
  • Zero Barriers: No downloads, no signups — just chat

Currently supports JAMB, SAT, and NEET with more on the way.

How We Built It

We used Bolt to build and deploy Examinator during the World’s Largest Hackathon.

  • Backend: FastAPI running on Bolt with Twilio WhatsApp integration
  • Exam Logic: Structured past questions in JSON + dynamic routing
  • LLM Core: Hybrid Groq + Gemini AI for accurate responses and explanations
  • RAG System: Ensures every question comes from a verified past paper, not hallucinated AI

Bolt made it easy to prototype fast, test flexibly, and scale with confidence, even within a high-pressure 48-hour build window.

Challenges We Ran Into

  • Balancing AI help with authentic exam accuracy (RAG > hallucination)
  • Optimizing for low-bandwidth regions while keeping interactions snappy
  • Designing a clean chat-based experience with no visual UI
  • Building a complete, scalable, AI-driven product in less than 48 hours

What We Learned

  • Conversations can teach just as effectively as classrooms
  • Simplicity beats complexity, especially in mobile-first education
  • Real-world testing is more valuable than theoretical design

What’s Next for Examinator

Short-term:

  • Expand support to GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, and other CBT exams
  • Add voice features for accessibility

Long-term Vision:

  • Scale to millions of students across Africa, Asia, and Latin America
  • Partner with education ministries, NGOs, and schools
  • Make world-class exam prep accessible to anyone with a smartphone and basic connectivity

Because the next Einstein might be in a remote village with only a basic smartphone, and that’s enough with Examinator.
