Inspiration
Both team members are on the Emory Women's Golf team. Starting in Fall 2025, our team has been playing a new point game where players earn points from practices, tournaments, and other team activities to unlock rewards. Until this project, everything was tracked on a whiteboard in the players’ lounge, which wasn’t very timely or transparent. So we, the two CS majors on the team, decided it would be fun to code a digital version and bring the whole system online during the hackathon.
What It Does
- As a guest, you can view the current point standings and activity log.
- If you log in as a player, you gain access to an anonymous comment section where you can remind coaches about points or just drop something funny for the team.
- If you log in as a coach, you can do everything players can, plus edit activities.
- Any updates appear instantly on the site!
How We Built It
We used:
- React, JavaScript, and CSS for the frontend
- Python for the backend
- FastAPI to connect everything
- MongoDB as the database
- Vercel and Render to deploy the website
Challenges We Ran Into
- GitHub merge conflicts (of course)
- Deployment was tough
- Styling took longer than expected
- It was also our first time connecting frontend, backend, and database on our own, so the learning curve was steep
Accomplishments We’re Proud Of
- We built our Minimum Viable Product just as we had planned out!
- Creating something our own team will actually use feels amazing
- We are also proud that we learned a lot in a short amount of time and grew as developers.
What We Learned
- React
- FastAPI
- Styling
- Deployment (Vercel + Render)
- How to build a full-stack project from scratch
What’s Next for EWGweb
- Clean up the codes
- Hash passwords so only coaches can modify activities
- Add features for coaches to set goals and prizes
- Add history tracking so people can view past seasons
- Make the website responsive on mobile as well
- Improve the styling in general
