Inspiration

In 2025, I visited a local repair shop and noticed a pile of broken laptops stacked in the corner. When I asked what happens to them the answer was simple: "Some get fixed, most disappear". Globally, over 50 million tons of electronic waste are generated every year. But the real issue is not just the volume. It's the invisibility. Once devices leave consumers or corporations, there is little transparency about where they end up or how their environmental impact is measured. At the same time, companies publish sustainability reports claiming carbon reductions and responsible recycling. But how much of that is verifiable? I wanted to build something that transforms sustainability from a claim into a proof. That's how EWaste Tracker was born.

What it does

EWaste Tracker is an AI-powered blockchain platform that creates a transparent, tamper-proof lifecycle record for electronic devices from registration to recycling. It enables: Device lifecycle tracking(Registered - Collected - Recycled) Immutable blockchain records for every update AI-calculated environmental dashboards Verifiable sustainability reporting When a device is recycled, our AI estimates measurable impact using environmental models. This transforms waste management into quantified environmental value.

How we built it

EWaste Tracker has three core layers:

1. Blockchain Layer

Smart contracts store device lifecycle updates on chain ensuring immutability and transparency. Each lifecycle change is written to the blockchain, creating an verified audit trail.

2. AI Impact Engine

A backend AI model calculates:

  1. CO2 emissions prevented
  2. Toxic materials diverted.
  3. Sustainability scoring

The AI uses predefined emission factors and lifecycle assessment data to generate impact reports.

3. Dashboard & Reporting Layer

A web based dashboard allows organizations to:

  1. Monitor total devices tracked
  2. View cumulative environmental impact
  3. Export ESG ready reports The system is set to operate as a B2B SaaS model, enabling recyclers, corporations and municipalities to integrate verified environmental tracking into their operations.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Blockchain ensures transparency, but the transaction costs and wallet interactions can be confusing for non technical users. We had to design the system so users interact easily without needing deep blockchain knowledge.

  2. We didn't want to build another dashboard. The challenge was ensuring that every sustainability claim generated by the system is verified on-chain.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Successfully registering devices and writing lifecycle updates to blockchain.
  2. Creating a working AI-driven environmental impact calculation engine.
  3. Designing a clean ESG-ready dashboard
  4. Building a solution that is both technically functional and socially meaningful

Most importantly we built something that shifts sustainability from marketing language to measurable infrastructure.

What we learned

This project taught us that: Sustainability without verification is fragile. Blockchain is not just about cryptocurrency - it can create trust in environmental systems. AI becomes powerful when applied to real-world measurement. We also learnt that environmental challenges are interdisciplinary - they require technology, policy, economics and human behavior working together.

What's next for EWaste-Tracker

Integrating QR-based device tagging for physical-world tracking. Expanding the AI model to handle all electronic devices and to include region-specific emission factors. Enabling automated carbon credit validation for verified recycling.

Long-term we envision EWaste Tracker becoming a verification layer for electronic waste - where every recycled device generates transparent, monetizable value. We're building the infrastructure for accountable sustainability.
