Inspiration
Growing up with classic 2D sandbox MMORPGs like Tibia, we fell in love with their open-world depth, high-stakes combat, and strong player communities. However, over the years, the surrounding web and server infrastructure for Open Tibia (OT) platforms stalled. Modern players expect fluid web interfaces, real-time data sync, instant account management, and reliable performance without clunky legacy setups.
We created Evomanias to bridge the gap between nostalgic 2D MMORPG gameplay and modern web standards. Our vision was to build an ecosystem where the website, server APIs, and community tools work together as one cohesive, modern application.
What it does
Evomanias is a fully featured, high-performance Open Tibia MMORPG ecosystem that combines custom game mechanics with a modern web portal (evomanias.com).
Key features include:
- Seamless Web-to-Game Sync: Instant account creation, character management, and automated guild administration.
- Live Community Analytics: Real-time highscores, online status tracking, and player death/kill logs updated dynamically via web APIs.
- Secure Economy & Shop: Integrated web shop and account services that deliver items directly to characters in-game without requiring server restarts.
- Modern UX/UI: A fast, responsive interface optimized for desktop and mobile, ensuring players can stay connected to the community from anywhere.
How we built it
Building Evomanias required a full-stack approach across low-level game server architecture and modern web framework development:
- Game Server & Logic: Built on a custom C++ game engine core utilizing Lua scripts (
revscripts) and XML definitions to drive game rules, event logic, and combat balance. - Web Portal & APIs: Developed using Next.js and React for a lightning-fast, server-side rendered frontend, backed by a MySQL database for transactional game and web data.
- Infrastructure & Deployment: Deployed on dedicated Linux (OVHcloud) host servers managed via SSH,
systemd, and custom bash deployment pipelines to ensure maximum uptime, low latency, and automated backups. - Design & UX: Prototyped and crafted in Figma to deliver a clean, modern aesthetic that retains a dark, immersive fantasy feel.
Challenges we ran into
- Real-Time Data Consistency: Syncing fast-moving in-game events (like player deaths, level-ups, and transactions) with a modern web database without introducing latency to the game loop.
- Legacy vs. Modern Architecture: Interfacing older server protocols and database schemas with modern web paradigms like Next.js API routes and asynchronous data fetching.
- Security & DDoS Mitigation: Protecting both the web platform and the game port against malicious traffic and automated botting while keeping response times fast for legitimate players.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Zero-Downtime Web Sync: Successfully implementing real-time web-to-game delivery for shop purchases and account changes.
- Sub-Millisecond Game Loop Performance: Tuning the C++/Lua server core to maintain smooth 60 FPS gameplay under heavy player loads.
- Unified Developer Workflow: Building automated deployment scripts that allow us to roll out client patches, server updates, and web fixes seamlessly.
What we learned
- Deep System Interoperability: Mastering how low-level C++ socket handling and web-based API endpoints can safely share state through optimized SQL transactions.
- Infrastructure Automation: The crucial role of Linux daemonization, system monitoring, and automated database backups when operating live, persistent world servers.
- User-Centric Game Design: How modern web convenience (like instant account recovery and clear visual analytics) drastically improves player retention in classic gaming communities.
What's next for Evomanias
- Web-Based Analytics Dashboard: Building detailed interactive player stats, heatmaps, and guild activity charts directly on the website.
- Enhanced Discord Integration: Expanding real-time bots to broadcast boss spawns, guild wars, and highscore milestones directly into community channels.
- Content Expansions & Quests: Designing new custom hunting grounds, unique event scripts, and balanced progression systems to keep the community growing.
