Inspiration
Of course, it is the survival horror genre! I love it and wanted to make something that other fans of the genre, and even people who are not very familiar with it can appreciate, and this game is special - because... it will not try to scare you! Well, maybe just a bit, but its goal is different.
What it does
Yes, you heard right - it is a love letter to the survival horror genre, and it is not scary because it's a parody game! For the first time in your life the survival horror theme will invoke completely different emotions, allowing you to laugh about everything that can be ridiculed in your favorite games! Can I mix the scary and funny genres? Play it and see!
How we built it
With lots of sweat, tears, and cursing. And AI tools, of course! I used them to create the VO, sound effects, music, character portraits, art, and animations for cutscenes and final titles.
Challenges we ran into
It was an incredibly challenging project, since the real-time battle system had to be used in an RPG Maker game, and implementing it wasn't easy. I ran into way too many bugs before everything - weapons, enemies, and sounds started working together as it should.
And, picking the proper cathegory to submit was challenging because the game does not have definite genre. It is adventure? Yes. But it is also a parody. And there is also a real-time combat system, but it is not a shooter either, since combat here is not challenging and is there only to create an atmosphere. And few puzzles does not make it a puzzle game as well. It is a mix of genres, it fits it at least several other cathegories, and due to that it does not fit anywhere, because all game aspects are ballanced and game isn't centered around single one. When I created this game, I had no definite genre in mind - just threw everything I found fun and fitting into the pot, and got this unholy brew as a result. So, after a lot of consideration I decided that "open" is the best term to describe this game.
I also had to entirely cut one of the puzzles because it fully refused to work in the browser mode due to the bug that I could not solve. It is very sad because I had no time to replace it with another puzzle, and now one of the clips in the final titles makes a lot less sense than it should have(
Accomplishments that we're proud of
That this game is complete and released! Also, the excellent quality of VO - with the help of ElevenLabs, I managed to achieve something that could easily compete with high-budget games. I spent a lot of time making sure each voice perfectly fits the character and portrays emotions correctly. I also voiced one of the characters myself! Can you guess which one? The AI voices are so good that it would be a hard task.
What we learned
I learned to use RM, and various AI tools better.
What's next for Evil Residence
Hopefully, winning the Chroma Awards! Is that love virus even working? Also, it is being added as a new level to my bigger parody game in a free update.
