Inspiration
My project, Evidence From The Earth, was inspired by what I observed in my village. People traditionally use natural sources such as roots, stems, and leaves directly to treat different illnesses. While these remedies may provide benefits, using them directly without proper scientific testing and filtering may also cause unwanted effects. I wanted to explore how we could identify the useful compounds in these natural sources and reduce harmful effects. When I shared this idea with my elders, friends, colleagues, and teachers, they encouraged me to work on it.
What it does
Evidence From The Earth provides information about medicinal plants, including their local and scientific names, traditional uses, and potential applications. The goal is to promote further research into natural sources and their useful compounds.
How we built it
We built the project as a modern web platform that organises information about medicinal plants and natural compounds. We focused on making scientific and traditional information simple, clear, and accessible.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was researching the scientific names, traditional uses, and potential applications of different plants. Finding reliable information and connecting plants with specific health conditions required a lot of research and cross-checking.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have transformed an idea inspired by traditional knowledge into a technology-based platform. We also successfully organised complex information into a simple and understandable format.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned about medicinal plants, natural compounds, scientific research, web development, information organisation, and problem-solving. We also learned how important it is to verify information before presenting it.
What's next for Evidence From The Earth
In the future, we want to expand the database, improve scientific verification, and collaborate with researchers and experts. Our long-term goal is to support the discovery and development of safer medicines from natural sources.
