Inspiration
We wanted to make eviction notices easier to understand. Legal notices can contain complicated language, deadlines, and legal references that are difficult for an ordinary tenant to interpret. ClearNotice was created to turn a confusing notice into information that is easier to read and understand.
What it does
ClearNotice is an eviction-notice analysis prototype. A user can select the India mode and provide an eviction notice for analysis. The app is designed to extract information from the notice and explain potentially important parts in a clearer way. The current experience focuses on:
๐ท Uploading or capturing a notice ๐ Extracting information from the notice โ๏ธ Identifying legal/statutory references ๐ Providing a clearer explanation โ ๏ธ Showing an informational/legal disclaimer
How we built it
We built ClearNotice as a web application with an AI-assisted document-analysis workflow.
The basic flow is:
Eviction notice โ OCR/text extraction โ information analysis โ legal-reference checking โ plain-language explanation
The interface is designed to make the process simple for someone who may not understand legal terminology.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was making legal information useful without making unsupported legal claims.
We also had to consider:
OCR mistakes when reading photographs Different legal rules across jurisdictions Correctly identifying legal sections Avoiding incorrect or hallucinated citations Explaining legal terminology in a way that is easy to understand Making it clear that the tool provides information and is not a substitute for professional legal advice
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a working prototype that turns the complicated idea of โunderstanding an eviction noticeโ into a simple digital workflow.
We're especially proud of the clean user experience, the notice-analysis concept, and the potential to make complicated legal information more accessible to ordinary users.
What we learned
We learned that building a legal-information tool requires more than simply adding AI.
The quality of the source data, OCR accuracy, jurisdiction, citations, and transparency about uncertainty are extremely important.
We also learned that AI is most useful here when it helps users understand information and find the underlying sources, rather than asking users to blindly trust an AI-generated answer.
What's next for Eviction Scare-Tactic Parser
Our next goal is to turn the prototype into a more complete civic-tech platform.
We plan to:
๐๏ธ Replace the demo legal corpus with verified state and municipal legal sources ๐ Add state + city/municipality selection ๐ Test the parser using real, properly redacted notices โ๏ธ Improve citation matching and reduce false positives/missed citations ๐ฎ๐ณ Build a Plain-Language Legal Translator for simple Hindi ๐พ Add secure saved notices and analysis history ๐ Create a timeline showing relevant dates and applicable provisions ๐ค Add a Civic Rights Assistant for plain-Hindi questions ๐ Generate complaint/application drafts from user-provided facts ๐ Connect all of these features to the existing ClearNotice app
