We all use PDF files every day. It's a great way to share information across a variety of devices regardless of their operating system or hardware. They have been around for quite some time now. But with changing technology, it is important to change the way we engage with old technology as well.

In this project, I'll be exploring two incredible AI tools that revolutionize how we handle PDF files. PDFs often contain crucial data like ID cards, certificates, and licenses, where traditional techniques suffice due to the sensitive nature of the content. But most of the time, PDF files are also review documents, research papers, memos, and information packets, that in this fast world, we just don't have the time to sit and go through. Well, with these AI tools, we don't have to! As weird as it sounds, retrieving important information out of a PDF is now as simple as just asking the PDF the questions you have.

AskYourPDF and ChatPDF are the tools one can use to chat with their PDF files to get the necessary information. In this project, I am going to talk about AskYourPDF, as I have used this tool many times in the past. It also has some features that I think are more useful than ChatPDF, however, both tools are very similar.

These tools are based on the GPT technology, which allows the user to ask their question and get the correct answer.

The target audience for this tool is almost anybody who has a PDF file to go through. As a student, I personally find this tool extremely useful as I have to go through a lot of memos, assignments, and readings. This tool not only saves my time but also makes sure that I don't miss something important from the PDF file I upload.

AskyourPDF solves a lot of problems for students and people who have to go through a lot of research papers and readings. I can just ask the AI questions about the research paper such as "summarize the second paragraph of the methodology section" so that I can understand it better. As a student, I also have to go through a lot of literature readings which can be very time-consuming. This tool has helped me to learn everything that I was supposed to learn through these reading assignments, without investing all the time these assignments usually need.

In order to understand how awesome this tool really is, I think it's best if someone takes a look at how it works. That is why I have created a video tutorial and walkthrough for this project. Upload the file you want to have a chat with.

Step 2:

Once it's done optimizing, just ask about all the information you want to know about from the document.

Check the source and information provided by the AI.

Impact on Learning:

This tool has had a great positive impact on my learning techniques and process. I think going through research papers related to the topic one is interested in is one of the best ways to learn about that topic as this information is not filtered through authors who interpret the data in these research papers and who might have biases that affect their writing. After learning about AskyourPDF, the efficiency of my research on any topic has increased a lot. This is because I can engage with the research papers and make sure I understand all the important parts. And the best part is, I can do all of this way faster than before! The aspects of my learning experience that were affected the most were efficiency, accuracy, and speed. Because of this amazing tool, the process of going through tough research papers is very easy now, which also incentivizes me to learn more!

My personal Use cases:

As a bilingual person, it is hard for me to understand some concepts in English or to frame some questions the way I want to in English. Fortunately, both of these tools support many languages, so I can ask the question I want to know about in my language and make sure I get all the required information out of the PDF.

Not only can I use these tools to retrieve information from the PDF file, but I can also use them to learn more about the content of the PDF! For example, if I don't understand a certain problem in an assignment given to me, I use ChatPDF to walk me through the solution and explain every step to understand the concepts better. I can also ask it to explain mathematical steps, which helps me a lot.

These tools can also be used as mobile applications. I have personally used the mobile application many times to go through long memos to get the most important information as soon as possible. The interface is easy to understand and great to use.

Differentiating factors:

Now, I have used AskyourPDF and ChatPDF both. Even though I prefer AskyourPDF, both of these tools have certain strong points that the other one does not. I think it's important that I mention these differentiating factors here so that other students like me can make the right choice for them.

AskyourPDF does a better job of giving the sources for all the information it gives you about the PDF file. Also, AskyourPDF has a web browser extension to make the user experience better.

ChatPDF's interface allows the user to see the PDF file on the left panel while chatting with the AI, which allows the user to always take a look at the PDF while asking questions, which enhances the research experience as a whole.

Limitations:

Like any AI tool out there right now, these tools also have some limitations. As a student, it is extremely important to make sure that such AI tools are only used to learn more, and not cheat. A drawback of this tool that I can think of is that students can use this tool to get the answers to their quizzes or tests, as usually they are also shared in the form of a PDF file. This also brings me to the next flaw of these tools. These tools are powered by ChatGPT, which is not the most accurate tool to go for when it comes to math problems.

However, there is a positive counterargument here. As the tool is powered by ChatGPT, it does add a lot more reliability to it, as compared to a scenario where it was powered by a non-trusted LLM.
