Inspiration
The ratio of women to men in engineering is 1:5. Though women have made extensive contributions to the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), they are still underrepresented in these industries. Despite women comprising of up 57.2 percent of all professional workers in 2015, they comprised only 46.6 percent of science professionals, 24.7 percent of computer and math professionals, and 15.1 percent of engineering and architecture professionals (https://ssec.si.edu/girls-and-women-in-stem).
Lets look at more stats. Here is the breakdown of current female representation in these large tech companies:
Google – 23% Apple – 23% Facebook – 23% Amazon – n/a Microsoft – 20%
Clearly, the scarcity of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields is long and persistent. Evergreen is an initiative designed to develop and help women grow an interest in the STEM fields. Ask yourself, why did you choose to pursue a STEM career? The answer to this is unbounded. Each person in this field has their own unique answer to this question. It could be an interest from seeing Yahoo Geocities application which inspired you to build a web app, seeing a laptop being taken apart on YouTube, playing league, or participating in a STEM conference. As a way to cultivate women in the area of STEM, Evergreen allows women to explore different academic/career pathways. It starts from the player choosing a university program. Once this is complete, the user will complete minor tasks, like tutoring, tinkering, volunteering, where they can earn experience points or money. These tasks in concepts would be in the form of a mini game. They can also spend money in their wallet to invest in their passions like building their own pc, etc. The ideas are limitless. This world of Evergreen is limitless. Evergreen can help close the gender gap by helping women discover their passions in STEM careers. Each person has their unique story of how they came into stem, but it's critical to offer these glimpses of experiences and opportunities through this virtual world. Studying and learning in STEM means to understand the world around you and to introduce innovative solutions to real-world challenges. This passion for women can be realize through role-playing in Evergreen.
How we built it
Used React.js, html,
Challenges we ran into
Not enough time to complete react.js website, but managed to design prototype with interactive flow.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Minimum viable product!
What we learned
I learned that Firebase can be used for real-time authentication to have personalized login credentials.
What's next for Evergreen
Evergreen can be expanded to include a personality survey which can then be utilized to match women to possible roles in STEM. Furthermore, there could be integration of databases from real-world opportunities and companies to make the game more realistic! The monetary platform of earning and spending can be further explored in later editions of this game.
