The making of - Everation
Inspiration The major source of inspiration came from our daily lives. We each have grandparents, and we all have a soft spot for the elderly. As a result, we decided to focus on the second prompt. After we made our decision, we wanted to seek for a real problem that older people face and try to solve it.
After doing thorough research, we discovered that, particularly as a result of the pandemic, the elderly are suffering from despair and loneliness due to a lack of communication. There are several causes for these findings, and we wanted to dig more into the problem.
What does it do? Our fundamental idea was that Everation would be a website experience designed specifically for older people, allowing them to feel comfortable and independent enough to discover events for social gatherings. We wanted to expand on this idea, so we decided to incorporate two key features: real-life events where everyone can attend and connect with their generation, and online events with many categories and topics of great interest to senior people.
How do we build it? We started by identifying the problem and learned as much as we could about it. Then we used a Miro board to put all our ideas and through constant meetings, we tried to gather our thoughts. We also did online research that validated our assumptions about the main idea. After that we went out on the streets and attempted to identify people from our target group, and we discovered that seniors indeed face these problems, but not in the way we imagined. They use technology and digital applications like Facebook and Viber to socialize with their friends and family, and the majority of them (those that can) go out and meet their friends on a regular basis. We've found that elders are comfortable with technology when they need to be and that our website will give them even more reasons to explore exciting events and places to hang out with people of their generation.
Challenges we faced This was our first Hackaton project, and we learned a lot from it. The most difficult obstacle we encountered was when doing guerrilla interviews. Even though we were eager to chat with the elderly, some of them were terrified and refused to even look at us. That was, however, to be expected. We attempted to adjust our approach and be warm towards them throughout the interview, and we saw how some of them were extremely open to talking.
What we are proud of? We are happy that we finished this project on time and worked cohesively as a team. It was our first team project, and we can't wait to work together again. We are also delighted that we chose a topic that we feel would be of great assistance to people who are frequently overlooked by others. We also learned a lot about the UX process along the road, and we now have an excellent experience to be proud of.
What we Learned We learned that no matter how well you prepare something, things don't always go as planned, but with constant communication and dedicated, hard work, practically everything is achievable. Even the idea of creating and designing a website for a target group such as ours is not so familiar to us.
