Inspiration
With all the current social media platforms, people are really focused on online connections. Although online connections are important, many people living in urban areas feel a lack of in person connection. We also had friends who moved to new cities for work and they have told us about their struggles in finding a community. During our research, we dove into Reddit and Quora forums and found that many people felt the same way. People wanted to find ways to not only connect with others but also explore the city they are in.
What it does
With that in mind, we wanted to create something where people would find in person connections while also being able to enjoy the urban city that they live in. Eventify focuses on small events that people can plan and invite others. It utilizes the city they live in where anyone is welcomed to participate. Anyone is free to make events and post them. We hope to not just bring the feel of a social app or online community but add in the element of in person connections.
How we built it
We looked at many social apps out there ranging from Instagram to Facebook events and NextDoor. After deciding on what we wanted our app to be, our team began with sketching workshops to lay down ideas of how we wanted it to look. Through multiple design workshops, we decided on our layouts and used Figma to create the designs and final high-fidelity screens.
Challenges we ran into
As we began to build the app, we realized that people had many unique interests in activities and events. We didn’t want that to be a barrier in forming connections but still decided to add filters and categories for people to look for things they were interested in. We were also unsure if we wanted messaging to be a feature of the app as the focus is in person connections. But we realized that people wanted to get to know each other both prior to and after events. Communicating through chats would be a nice way for users to get comfortable and find friends to either go to or create events. We wanted the actions to be very intuitive on the app so that people can easily create or sign up for events and put their focus into going to the events.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are really proud as the app came out the way we envisioned it to. The final prototype looks well-refined and each page is designed with the intent of creating a social app. We were able to be efficient with our team to fully carry out the UX design process. From identifying the problem to analyzing market opportunities and to designing, we worked really well together and utilized our individual strengths to come up with Eventify.
What we learned
Our initial research taught us a lot about social connections and the drawbacks of living in urban environments. We realized how important it is for people to have meaningful in-person connections as it benefits their mental and physical health. Building connections becomes more difficult once out of school and we wanted to tackle this problem. We also learned new skills in our design process and utilizing components and auto layout features.
What's next for Eventify
We hope to conduct usability tests with a large sample of people, especially those who are living in urban areas or have just moved to urban areas. We want to see how likely people would use the app and whether it would positively impact social connections. We also want to think about better ways to connect with people and to incentivize people to go to events. Maybe going to events would give a reward and connecting others would allow you to co-host events. These are all interesting things to consider moving forward.
