Inspiration
Living on campus offers many opportunities for connection, but we noticed that many residents often missed hall events—not because of a lack of interest, but because of information overload. Important announcements were buried under overwhelming Telegram and WhatsApp spam, making it difficult to keep track of what was actually happening.
Seeing low turnout at well-planned events and hearing peers say "I didn’t know this was happening” inspired us to rethink how hall information is shared. We wanted a solution that was simple, transparent, and student-centric—one that improves visibility without adding yet another noisy channel.

Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was scoping. While there were many features we wanted to implement—such as direct event sign-ups and photo uploads—we had to prioritise core functionality to deliver a working and meaningful product.
Another challenge was balancing the needs of different stakeholders. Residents value ease of use and transparency, while hall leaders require actionable feedback and efficiency. Designing a system that serves both groups fairly required careful consideration.
Finally, working within tight time constraints meant making trade-offs between technical depth and user experience. Learning when to simplify without losing impact was one of the most valuable lessons from this project.

What we learned
Despite these challenges, this project represents our best effort to solve a genuine student problem within real-world constraints. More importantly, it shows how thoughtful design and small systemic changes can significantly improve the campus living experience.
What's next for Event Tracker
With further development, the Hall Event Tracker has the potential to grow into a unified platform for halls, residential colleges, and houses—helping students stay informed, engaged, and connected.
