Eve: A Period Product Safety Platform 💕
Inspiration 💡
We were inspired by the lack of transparency in the period product industry . Many period products, such as tampons, pads, and menstrual cups, contain materials that could be harmful or irritating to users. We wanted to create a platform that empowers individuals to make informed decisions about what they put in or on their bodies, particularly when it comes to something as intimate as period products.
What it does 📊
Eve is a user-friendly website that allows individuals to search or scan the period products they use, and get instant information about the materials used in those products. Based on a comprehensive database of known materials and their safety ratings, Eve provides a safety score for each product, highlighting any potential risks associated with its ingredients. Users can also learn about safer alternatives, giving them the knowledge to make more informed choices.
How we built it 🛠️
We used a combination of front-end and back-end technologies to build the site. The front end is built using Html for a dynamic, responsive user experience 📱. For the webcam back end, we used Tenforslow to handle data processing, training a convolutional neural network which was trained with a primary data set 📊. For the text processing, we used the Groq API to find information about the safety of a menstrual product.
Challenges we ran into 🚧
One of the biggest challenges was compiling a comprehensive and reliable database of materials, as there is no existing database of menstrual products. To do this, we had to collect data ourselves. From our data collection, we gathered around 100 pictures of 6 unique menstrual product brands.

Accomplishments that we're proud of 🎉
We're proud of our implementation of both the text generation search feature and the scanning feature. Not only did we successfully implement a search feature that goes through popular menstrual product brands, but we also have a built-in webcam scanner that identifies the brand and type of product and acts as a search as well.
What we learned 🤖
We learned a lot about the complexities of material safety, especially when it comes to personal care products. The amount of conflicting information available online was overwhelming, and we quickly realized how important it is to curate trusted sources and data . We also learned how challenging it can be to create a user-friendly interface for something as detailed as product safety—simplifying complex scientific data without losing the nuances was a balancing act . Additionally, we learned how crucial transparency is in the period product industry, and how our platform can be a game-changer in terms of giving people the information they deserve .
What's next for Eve 🚀
Moving forward, we plan to expand our database and continue to refine webcam feature to include more products . We also hope to integrate user-generated reviews and experiences, as personal stories can offer valuable insight into how certain materials affect different people . Another exciting feature we're exploring is the ability for users to create an account and track the safety of the products they’ve used over time, perhaps even receiving reminders to check or update their product choices. We also hope to make Eve a trusted resource for anyone looking to learn more about the safety of their products.
