Inspiration
Each year, landlords in the United States file an average of 3.6 million eviction cases, putting millions of tenants at risk of losing their homes. The eviction process is fast, with tenants often having only 3-5 days to respond, and hiring a lawyer can cost between $500 and $2000, making legal defense inaccessible for many.
Saketh, an NYU dropout and cofounder, faced eviction for a late rent payment in New York City. He experienced the uncertainty of navigating the eviction process alone. This ordeal inspired the creation of Eve.ai, aiming to empower tenants with an accessible and affordable tool to defend their rights and avoid homelessness.
What it does
Create and file eviction response forms in minutes using agents
There are 3 key steps for eve.ai to create an eviction response:
- The tenant uploads the eviction complaint forms to Eve.ai.
- The tenant interacts with Eve.ai's voice agent, which asks a few follow-up questions and requests any relevant evidence.
- Eve.ai auto-fills the eviction response form with the tenant's denials to the landlord's claims, ensuring all required fields are completed accurately.
How we built it
- Identified key pain points in the eviction process (Saketh was able to rely on his experience)
- Built initial prototypes to test form generation and filling functionalities.
- Built the individual agentic workflows (complaint form analysis + voice agent)
- Conducted trials with different complaint forms to refine the system.
Challenges we ran into
- Initially we had trouble with file conversion therefore we decided to parse the complaint forms as images to save time.
- Had trouble doing API calls to Flowise - but were able to figure it out by watching their tutorials
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Tackled the problem (housing insecurity) that over 3+ million Americans face every year and built a free tool that automates away all of the work using AI agents.
What we learned
The forms used to build our eviction defense workflow are similar to those used in domestic violence and other civil litigation cases. This means we can adapt and productize these other legal services in a similar manner, broadening the impact of Eve.ai to help even more people in need much faster and cheaper.
What's next for Eve.ai - AI-Powered Eviction Defense
- Automatically file the completed form with the respective court's online e-filing system.
- Partner with Housing advocacy groups so Eve.ai can assist multiple tenants simultaneously.
- Partner with Legal aid organizations to incorporate Eve.ai into their toolkit to extend their reach and support more clients efficiently.
