Eusebio Merlay is a science outreach series project designed for kids and family audiences, combining humor, imagination, and a subtle touch of fantasy. The aim of the project is to awaken curiosity about science while making complex ideas accessible, engaging, and visually appealing for viewers of all ages.
Inspiration
The project was inspired by a simple but ambitious question: can science be explained with rigor without losing playfulness? Eusebio Merlay was born from the desire to bridge scientific knowledge and storytelling, using humor, visual metaphors, and imaginative situations to turn abstract concepts into experiences that feel alive, intuitive, and memorable.
What I Learned
During the development of the project, I learned that clarity only comes after deep understanding. To explain science in a simple way, it is essential to investigate each topic deeply, often going far beyond what will finally appear on screen. This process reinforced a key idea: simplifying is not about reducing complexity, but about finding the most precise and meaningful way to communicate it.
I also learned that children and adults engage with visual information differently. Children look for wonder, emotion, and immediacy, while adults value aesthetic quality, conceptual depth, and visual intelligence. Designing content that works on both levels became one of the core lessons of the project.
How the Project Was Built
Each episode starts with in-depth research into a specific scientific topic, identifying its essential principles and its narrative potential. From there, the concepts are translated into a visual and imaginative language, using characters, situations, and metaphors that make the ideas easy to grasp and enjoyable to explore.
Scientific and mathematical reasoning is always respected, but never presented in an intimidating way. The focus is on understanding, not on formulas, allowing the audience to intuitively grasp ideas through images, storytelling, and humor.
Challenges
One of the main challenges of Eusebio Merlay is the need to research each subject thoroughly while later explaining it in a way that feels simple, visual, imaginative, and fun. Achieving this balance between scientific rigor and entertainment requires constant refinement and critical thinking.
Another important challenge is creating a visual universe that fully engages children while remaining visually sophisticated and interesting for adults. The project continuously navigates this dual objective, striving to respect both audiences without underestimating either.
Eusebio Merlay is ultimately an invitation to learn, to imagine, and to rediscover science as a shared source of wonder across generations.
