Inspiration
Living amidst a pandemic, and several lockdowns, the mental health of people has declined and not enough resources exist which are accessible and can be used at the time of crisis. We saw our friends struggle, and we might have faced the consequences of stress and anxiety in these unprecedented times ourselves too. Thankfully, we had people around us to help us but what if you are alone and there is a lockdown. You've been stuck at your home and you have a panic attack. What is it that you can do? Imagine something that can help you which is always with you. Something like a phone.
What it does
By holding your phone a certain way, Eunoia uses sensors to detect physical symptoms of a panic attack and distress, after which it guides you through it and helps you calm down. The main physical symptoms of a panic attack are elevated heart rate, shortness of breath, shaking/trembling, chills and sweating. Using the camera, microphone, gyroscopic/accelerometer sensors respectively, it detects a panic attack and immediately opens the app which gives three options to help the person calm down. We have included scientific methods to guide someone through it.
How we built it
We made a functional prototype using Figma to demostrate how the app would look normally and what it will do when a panic attack is detected.
Challenges we ran into
pinpointing sensors to the physical symptoms, creating a visually aesthetic and calming prototype so as the help the person is every way.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The solution to what happens when a panic attack is detected, creating a functional prototype that if made can help millions of people
What we learned
the field of computer science and medicine are very compatible and compsci has altruistic side to it which should be explored and worked upon by everyone in this field. half of the team had a very steep learning curve in figuring out figma works and building eunoia on a new software.
What's next for eunoia
We would like to add more accurate sensors and indications to detect panic attack. Expand the app to include more mental health resources for other mental illnesses using date collected though sensors. Adding a voice assistant so that the person can actually converse and feel like someone is there when going through a panic attack.
