🌍 Inspiration

As a full-stack developer, I’ve seen how great design can fall flat—or worse, offend—when cultural context is overlooked. I created EthnoLens AI to solve this: a smart assistant that helps creatives avoid cultural blind spots and design with confidence.

The idea was born from one simple insight: design without cultural awareness is a gamble. What looks elegant in one culture might be inappropriate in another. EthnoLens AI brings inclusivity and insight to the design table—making your visuals globally respectful, not just locally stylish.

⚙️ What it does

EthnoLens AI empowers creators with 3 core features:

  • 🔍 Design Analysis
Select any element on the Adobe Express canvas, choose a country and business context—and get instant AI feedback on possible cultural or symbolic concerns.

  • 💬 Follow-up Chat
Got questions after your scan? Ask follow-up prompts like "What color would work better?" and get tailored advice. It's iterative, conversational design help—on demand.

  • 🖼️ Image Analysis
Upload any image to check for culturally sensitive content before it’s added to your project. AI scans it, contextualizes it, and explains the risks.

All powered by advanced AI (including Gemini 2.5 Flash) and packed into a lightweight, expressive UI.

🍀 Submission Categories

Main Category – Best AI-Enhanced Experience
Ethno Lens AI uses advanced multimodal AI (Gemini 2.5 Flash) to analyze designs and images for cultural and symbolic risks. It transforms Adobe Express into an inclusive-by-default environment — a true AI-enhanced design experience.

Secondary Category – Most Valuable to Express Users
By helping creators avoid costly cultural missteps, Ethno Lens AI brings practical, high-impact value to Express users. It empowers global designers with clarity and confidence — directly inside their creative flow.

🛠️ How I built it

Built as an Adobe Express Add-on, EthnoLens AI uses the Express Add-on SDK and runtime.apiProxy("documentSandbox") to grab selected design elements. The frontend is pure HTML/CSS/JS—intuitive, clean, fast. On the backend, a Node.js server connects to a powerful multimodal AI via REST API for both text and image analysis.

The frontend reflects state changes dynamically: spinners, markdown results, error hints, and follow-up chat—all updating live in response to user actions.

🧗 Challenges

Building EthnoLens AI wasn’t just about making things smart — it had to be real, usable, and ready fast.
The biggest challenge? Shipping a helpful product in a short time frame. I had to prioritize key features, streamline the UX, and make sure everything—from AI responses to UI feedback—felt smooth and reliable, even under tight deadlines.

Another tricky part: unpredictable user behavior. Users might forget to select something, upload odd files, or jump between flows. I had to plan for all of it — with clear error messages, graceful logic that adapts to messy real-world input.

And since it was my first time working with the Adobe Express SDK, there was a learning curve — understanding its sandboxed environment, limitations, and best practices took time, but it paid off in the final experience.

🏆 Proud Moments

  • 🔹 Built a fully integrated AI flow right inside Adobe Express.

  • 🔹 Created clean markdown outputs with contextual insights.

  • 🔹 Made the UI feel responsive, informative, and native.

  • 🔹 Designed follow-up chat for iterative guidance—something that’s rare in tools like this.

📚 What I learned

  • 🎓 It was my first time working with the Adobe Express SDK — discovering its capabilities was exciting.

  • ⚙️ I refined my skills in AI API design, prompt engineering, and UX-first development.

  • ⚡ Most importantly, I learned how much designers crave instant, meaningful cultural feedback. It’s not just helpful—it’s necessary.
