Ethical Lens

_ Stop funding the unethical _ Inspired by Intel selling 10% of their company to the gouvernment and RAG pipelines, Ethical lens is a google extension that tells you how unethical the product that you are buying is. We are currently living in a society where more and more people have access to the internet, which means that there are more consumers. This is an issue as the main leading companies that sell products have many unethical activities. In order to discourage people to consume from these businesses, we built a chrome extension that suggests better alternative while sensibilizing the consuemrs.

The Product

Ethical Lens offers a service that informs the user on information about the ethical behaviors of a company he's purchasing a product of. The program asks Serper to search for articles regarding the company's behaviors and evaluates them using a framework given to claude. Claude then gives an estimation from 0-100 to how unethical it considers the company is.

What we learnt

Coming into this hackathon, all team members did not have much experience coding, and for 2 of us, our first hackathon project. We wanted to try to make a Google extension instead of an app or a website. This is our first time using js, and with the help of AI, we could transpose our ideas into code and read the code.

How the project was built

A lot of antigravity, and a bit of debugging and tweaking by hand, lots of readmes/pseudocode files were created in order to understand what was written. The code essentially asks Serper to search for articles and to analyze it through Claude, determining how unethical a brand is.

Challenges

Lots of debugging, lots of times, fixing one issue will create two more, and seems like an infinite loop.
